Polyamory in the News: roundup time again
Activists throw the biggest poly convention anywhere yet. A major newspaper analyzes the poly movement at length for a million readers. And read all about the first polyamory-themed series on mainstream TV, with the community’s strong and divergent reactions to it.

Poly in the News: Latest Roundup!
The day before a key Republican primary, polys become a political football in a good way. More polyfolks discover they can appear on TV and not die. Joys of poly parenting are described to the world. The feminist roots of modern poly get an airing. And the Polyamory Leadership Network gets its first mention in the New York Times.

Polyamory in the News: latest roundup
I’m really looking forward to the Poly Living conference coming up February 10-12 in Philadelphia. But meanwhile… time for another news roundup.

Newt Gingrich brings a burst of opportunities for people to tell the world about their non-Gingrichy open relationships, the kind built on caring and support all around. Mainstream TV presents several long-term triad families explaining their way of life, plus a fictional one doing the same. Next Gen poly, on and off campus. Dan Savage invites readers to “Meet the Monogamish.”

Polyamory in the News: What the world is saying about us.
Hi folks. Time has passed... Here's another news roundup....

Canada legalizes most polyamory in a major court case. Dear Abby gives a platform for a renowned poly advice nurse to reach millions. Open marriage redux. Threesomes naturally. An emergent phenomenon at Occupy Wall Street. And, would your polyfamily like to be media stars? If so, learn how to stay in charge.

Polyamory in the News: How the world is seeing us
Hi folks! Another season, another news roundup....

Dear Abby treats us like normals, almost. Promoting a poly event in the mainstream media with brains and cute overload. Obliterating a clueless mental-health professional. TV done right. Next-generation voices, teenage and up. And, “with their heads on their shoulders, they create their own identity using tools 2.0.” (That’s supposed to be us.)

Polyamory in the News: how the world is seeing us.
Hi folks! Another season, another news roundup....

In Washington, a U.S. Senate committee hears testimony about the polyamory threat to America. “The New Monogamy,” i.e. non-monogamy, takes off in the mainstream media. Polyamorous polygamists file a legal challenge in federal court and could actually win. Triads and quads “redefining love’s boundaries” are featured on TV evening news.

Poly in the recent news
A parenting magazine presents polyamory as a logical alternative. TV news goes all awkward covering a Loving More convention. Dan Savage as America’s most important sex ethicist. New poly books. More on campus. And, how to frame the emergence of polyamory as the natural outcome of the last several centuries of human development.

What is the world saying about us? If you haven't kept up with Polyamory in the News in the last three months (or subscribed to it by the LJ friends feed or other feed), here is some of what you missed:

Polyamory in the News roundup
Polyamory advocates break new ground before one of Canada’s highest courts, with media coverage to match. A happy poly household is featured on TV, with toddler. We read that “Three is the new two,” “Poly is the new gay,” and “Is polyamory the new black?” Deborah Anapol weighs upsides and downsides. And a study uncovers a pathetic truth: most young lovers don’t even hear each other’s agreements regarding monogamy.

Polyamory’s most important court case since 1999 opens next week, and this time our side is prepared. Meanwhile, TV documentaries on polyfamilies in Quebec and Denmark show how TV can do it right if the producers are so inclined. In the U.S., “Sister Wives” sets the new public image for group families, and that’s not so bad. Writers from Dan Savage to a friendly Episcopal priest weigh in on poly life. And the poly-mono anthropology debate rolls on.

Polyamory in the News
A hot new book matches poly to our evolved human nature. A legal scholar examines what will happen if poly is viewed as a sexual orientation. Get ready for “the new monogamy,” the coming term for non-monogamy. Stranger in a Strange Land redux. Great radio and TV. Conservatives flip out.

Polyamory in the News: a race to define ourselves
Politicians spend millions to define who they are to the public before their opponents can do it for them. The modern polyamory movement has been defining itself successfully with nothing but volunteers, enthusiasm, and a shoestring. When does the backlash start? I keep waiting for it, and year after year it keeps not happening.

This is long, but the upshot:

(feel free to pass it on, attributed or not, you can link to http://community.livejournal.com/poly_news/25160.html if you want)

Professor Chai Feldblum, Mr. Obama’s nominee for commissioner on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), is, according to her bio at Georgetown University, "a leading lawyer, scholar and speaker on gay and lesbian rights, disability rights, and health and welfare issues" who "has been actively involved in federal civil rights and social welfare legislative issues since 1988. Her efforts have included opposing or shaping legislative and regulatory initiatives on gay rights, AIDS, disability, and health care; serving as the lead drafter of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and most recently, helping to develop employment policy changes to advance workplace flexibility."

More Poly in the Media, from Fox News to Miss Manners
The last three months have seen a continued stream of Polyamory in the News, as you know if you've friended the nice LJ feed at LiveJournal polymedia.

So where's the conservative backlash already? The coverage we're getting -- the stuff your worried mother is reading (and your boss) -- continues to range from neutral to remarkably positive, by and large. Even a Fox News commentator had decent things to say.

Have the bigtime conservatives shot their wad (those are the items with my "critics of poly" tag) and quit? They've hardly peeped about us in more than a year — aside from the pro-forma mentions, which haven't changed in maybe a decade, that after gay marriage polys are the next step down the slippery slope to marrying goats.

Maybe they’ve realized that the more they call attention to us, the more people hear that polyamory is actually possible. So, have we been bracing for a storm that's not coming? I wouldn't bet on it; keep your wits and arguments sharp.

Meanwhile, if you haven't kept up with what the world is saying about us, here's some of what you recently missed:

Not exactly polyamory, but in some ways relevant

The Australian media has been commenting this week on moves in Britain to afford legal recognition of polygamous marriages that take place in other countries

http://www.livenews.com.au/Articles/2008/06/25/Australia_should_give_legal_protection_to_polygamists_Keysar_Trad

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23922968-5010800,00.html

This has, of course, been used as an opportunity to bash muslims:

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,23928410-5000117,00.html

Australia's Attorney-General Robert McClelland has responded with the same thing that he repeated endlessly when there were recent legislative changes to nearly equalise homosexual de-facto relationships with heterosexual ones, but keep marriage a purely hetero affair:

"we made it clear before the election that the Government regards marriage as being between a man and a woman and we don't support any measures that seek to (change) that"
